Introduction to Kayaking

This two hour beginners course focuses on basic paddling strokes, safety and rescue. Whether you are new to paddling or have just never had any formal training, this course offers the skills and knowledge to keep you safe and comfortable on the water. The class will begin with on land introductions and a safety chat where we will go over proper safety equipment, Transport Canada regulations, weather, and proper paddling clothing. Once we get in the water we will then learn the basic strokes needed to get you going. Strokes covered are: Front stroke, sweep stroke, draw stroke, and low brace. We will practice those newly learned skills during a short paddle in McNeill Bay. Your instructor will also introduce group and self rescues techniques with and without a paddle float. No need to get in the water during this course though!

Where to meet

We meet at Kitty Islet beach, across the street from our office. There is plenty of parking on Beach Drive. The nearest bus stop is at Central/St. Patrick. Private washroom facilities available.

What to bring

Wear comfortable clothes, ideally fast drying athletic wear or merino wool (not cotton). Water shoes are great since you will need to step into the water to get into your kayak. Hat, sunscreen are always a good idea. All kayaking equipment is provided.
