Sea Kayak capsize and re-entry rescue course

This course will be covering every possible way to get back in your kayak and more! If you are a novice kayaker or have never had any formal instructions this kayak course is for you. It will greatly increase your safety and confidence on the water. This kayaking course includes intentional capsizing, and performing various reentries into your kayak. You will be going into the water to perform these skills. We have some wetsuits available, but during the summer months swimwear is fine too. After participants are comfortable with these re-entry skills we will explore sculling and rolling. Get the confidence needed for deep open water kayaking that comes from having these essential life saving skills. Skills taught in this kayak course include: - Assisted re-entries; - mermaid, - leghook, - sandwich, - scoop, - stirrup - Solo re-entries; - paddle float, - cowboy scramble, - salmon jump - Sculling upright & rolling. And more

Where to meet

The course takes place at Hamsterly Beach at Elk Lake. We meet there. Parking and washroom/change facilities available.

What to bring

Wear comfortable clothes, ideally fast drying athletic wear or merino wool (not cotton). Water shoes and a change of clothes are encouraged (change rooms available). For re-entry practice we can provide neoprene wetsuit if desired. Make sure you wear sun protection. All kayaking equipment is provided.

Why take this course?

This lesson will give you the practical skills needed to handle and reenter your kayak from an unexpected capsize. This lesson will greatly increase your safety and confidence on the water.
