This kayak course will give you the Paddle Canada Basic Kayak Skills certification. It focuses on developing fundamental kayaking skills and knowledge to paddle in protected waters within a group. If you are a novice kayaker or have never had any formal instructions this kayak course is for you. It will greatly increase your safety and confidence on the water. The second half of this kayaking course includes an intentional capsizing, and performing a reentry into your kayak during an assisted rescue. You will be going into the water to perform these skills. (We have some wetsuits available, but during the summer months swimwear is fine too) Skills taught in this kayak course include: - Water safety - Kayak parts and features - Essential kayak equipment - Launching and landing your kayak - Basic kayak strokes - Group travel and basic route planning - Proper preparation for immersion - Capsizing safely - Wet exits - Assisted re-entries - Basic towing And more





Where to meet
The course takes place at Elk Lake, Hamsterly Beach. There is ample parking. Washrooms and changing facilities are available.
What to bring
Wear comfortable clothes, ideally fast drying athletic wear or merino wool (not cotton). Water shoes and a change of clothes are encouraged (change rooms available). For re-entry practice a neoprene wetsuit is recommended (contact us for rentals). Make sure you wear sun protection. All kayaking equipment is provided.
Paddle Canada
This is the primary starting point of the Paddle Canada Sea Kayak skills progression. With a focus on foundation skills and knowledge, Basic Kayak Skills inspires students to go out on short paddling excursions in calm and sheltered waters.
